18th Commonwealth Games - Day 10: AthleticsSome of the greatest names in British athletics have represented Team England at the Commonwealth Games.

David Hemery, Alan Pascoe, Daley Thompson, David Moorcroft, Brendan Foster, Steve Cram, Steve Ovett, Jonathan Edwards, Kathy Cook and Denise Lewis have all competed at and won medals at past Commonwealth Games.

Dame Kelly Holmes, who became President of Commonwealth Games England in May 2009, won gold for England at the Victoria Games in 1994, silver at Kuala Lumpur four years later and then gold again at Manchester 2002.

She said the Commonwealth Games provided her with invaluable experience of major multi-sport events ahead of her double gold medal winning performance at the Athens 2004 Olympics.

England won six golds, four silvers and eight bronzes at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, with Christine Ohuruogu (400m), Kelly Sotherton (heptathlon), Lisa Dobriskey (1500m), Phillips Idowu (triple jump), Dean Macey (decathlon) and Nick Nieland (javelin) capturing golds.

The performance in Melbourne took Team England through the 500 athletics medals mark. Team England athletes have won 177 golds, 173 silvers and 157 bronzes to top the all-time medal table.

There are 46 athletics events taking place at the Delhi Games - the track and field events, as well as the marathon and 20km walk for men and women.

Athletics makes its 19th Commonwealth Games appearance in Delhi – it has featured at every Games to date.

It is one of four sports on the Delhi programme to feature para-sport events for elite athletes with disabilities.
