Each Commonwealth Games features competition across 17 sports in total – 10 core sports and seven chosen by the Organising Committee for those specific games.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games take place in Delhi, India from the 3rd to the 14th of October 2010 and the 17 sports it will feature are - archery, aquatics (swimming, synchronised swimming & diving), athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby 7s, shooting, squash, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
A profile of each sport, including highlights of achievements in recent games and tips on what to look out for in Delhi will be coming soon.
In Glasgow in 2014 judo and triathlon will replace archery and tennis.
Other Commonwealth Games sports
Other sports that have been included on the Programme of at least one Commonwealth Games and are either classed as core, optional or recognised include Diving, Fencing, Rowing, Tenpin Bowling and Water Polo.
Recognised sports require further growth within the Commonwealth before they can be classed as an option for a candidate city to choose in the future. Other sports currently recognised by the CGF that have not yet been included on the Programme of a Commonwealth Games are; Billiards/Snooker, Canoeing, Golf, Handball, Life Saving, Softball, Yachting/Sailing, and Volleyball. Cricket appeared on the Programme in Kuala Lumpur 1998 but is not currently listed as recognised.
Para Sports
For the first time in the Games history, indeed at any multi-sport event in the world, a number of Para-Sports were included in a fully inclusive Sports Programme in Manchester 2002. 20 countries sent both male and female elite athletes with a disability to compete in 10 events across 5 different Para-Sports; Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
15 Para-Sports medal events will be included on the Delhi 2010 programme across athletics, swimming, powerlifting and table tennis.
Since awarding Delhi the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the CGF and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have established a list of 4 core Para-Sports: Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting and Swimming. Events from up to 3 optional Para-Sports can also be chosen by the host city; Cycling (Track), Table Tennis and Wheelchair Basketball.
