The Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games
A new look England overcame the difficulties of Delhi and finished third in the medals table thanks to gold medals from the likes of Tom Daley and Rebecca Adlington.
The 19th Commonwealth Games were hosted by Delhi, India, who became the second Asian nation to play host after Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
The sports programme changed once again with Melbourne favourites basketball and triathlon making way for archery and tennis, the former making its first appearance since 1982 and the latter enjoying its debut.
Delhi saw the arrival of a new look England team, debuting its ‘We are England’ brand and backed by both a new Board of Non-executive Directors and a new President - Dame Kelly Holmes, winner of three Commonwealth Games medals for England and two Olympic gold medals for Team GB, succeeded Sir Christopher Chataway in 2009.
Despite widespread concern over the readiness of the host city, the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games went ahead beginning with the Opening Ceremony on the night of October 3rd where badminton star Nathan Robertson was England’s flag bearer.
England won medals in all but one sport with 37 gold, 60 silver and 45 bronze to finish third in the medals table. It was the first time in 16 years the nation had finished outside the top two with hosts India securing second place on the final day of competition.

Despite this ranking England won more medals than in Melbourne with 142 overall, their third highest ever medals tally at the Commonwealth Games and the biggest by an England team overseas.
There was victory in the archery and squash medals tables thanks to heroics from the likes of archer Danielle Brown, England’s first ever Para-sport athlete to compete in able-bodied competition, and Nick Matthew, who had been crowned world number one squash player for the first time three months earlier.
Mick Gault, England’s most decorated athlete retired just one medal short of the Games’ all-time medal individual medal tally.
The England team featured many star names that would go on to represent and win medals for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics. Tom Daley, Rebecca Adlington, Greg Rutherford, Lizzie Armitstead and Max Whitlock to name a few all represented England in Delhi and won medals.
