England won the very first basketball medal on offer when it appeared on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games' sports programme.

England's women were the proud winners of the bronze medal in the third-place play-off against Nigeria, overcoming their opponents 78-75. They started emphatically by winning their group games against Mozambique and India 84-46 and 104-57 respectively, clocking up a massive points scored total.

England's men also medalled, again a bronze and again after a third place play-off win over Nigeria.
