09.01.2021 Harten wants to use Commonwealth disappointment

Jo Harten says she will take the memory of Glasgow 2014 with her on the court as England’s netball team prepare for the opening match of their tour of Jamaica.

Harten was part of the side that was beaten 52-48 by the Jamaicans in the bronze medal match at last year’s Commonwealth Games.

It was a disappointing end to the competition for Harten and co who came away with bronze in Delhi four years earlier.

But she insists the loss will serve as a reminder as the team looks towards success in the World Cup.

“I don’t think it (Glasgow 2014) will ever be put to bed. It’s got a place in my heart. We went there to win, andwe didn’t, simple as that,” said Harten.

“It will always be a friendly reminder I think for me, especially as an individual, for what I hope to achieve in this sport and with this team.

“But we’ve got to look forward now, and the next big thing is the World Cup.

“We need to put out really strong performances and get squad rotation going as well which is what we’ve done throughout the series.

“I’m not sure what rest is at the moment. We’re trying to push through but that’s how netball is going, as elite athletes, we’ve really got to step up to the mark. It’s my professional job now.

“I’m looking forward to 2015. We’ve got the series away in Jamaica and then two days later it’s a flight to New Zealand, settle in for two weeks and then the season kicks in again so it really is go.”
