19.01.2021 Ouseph savours confidence-boosting victory at Swedish Masters

Triple Commonwealth Games medal-winning badminton player Rajiv Ouseph admitted he had enjoyed the perfect preparation for the new season after clinching his first tour title in almost two years at the Swedish Masters.

England number one Ouseph had not won a title on the world circuit since the Finnish Open in 2013 but he put that stat firmly to bed with a commanding performance in Uppsala.

The 28-year-old, who overcame Estonia Raul Must over three games in the last four, was never behind in the final against Pablo Abian on Sunday.

While the Spaniard would not let the top seed have things all his own way, Ouseph proved too powerful, winning 21-15, 21-17 in 38 minutes.

Ouseph was part of the England squad which won mixed team silver at Glasgow 2014, while he also has a singles silver and mixed team bronze in his collection from the 2010 Games in Delhi.

And while using the tournament in Sweden mainly as a warm up for bigger challenges to come, he was still happy to lift some silverware.

"It was great to get the win," said Ouseph. "I mainly played for the match practice for the new season and I was trying not to focus on being top seed and just taking one match at a time.

"But the final was fairly comfortable and I just needed to stay disciplined which I managed to do well."
